Understanding the Child Tax Credit

2026 Child Tax Credit

  • $2,200 Maximum credit per qualifying child under 17
  • $1,700 Maximum refundable amount per child (ACTC)
  • $500 Credit for other dependents (non-refundable)

Source: Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (IR-2025-103). Select a different tax year in the calculator to see that year's amounts.

Qualifying Child Requirements

  • • Age: Under 17 at the end of the tax year
  • • Relationship: Son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or descendant
  • • Residency: Lived with you for more than half the year
  • • SSN: The child needs a valid Social Security number issued before the due date of the return. Starting in 2025, the taxpayer (or at least one spouse on a joint return) also needs a Social Security number valid for employment (IRC 24(h)(7)).

Income Phase-Out

The credit begins to phase out when your modified AGI exceeds:

  • $400,000: Married Filing Jointly
  • $200,000: All other filing statuses

The credit is reduced by $50 for every $1,000 (or part thereof) over the threshold.

Refundable vs. Non-Refundable

Non-Refundable Portion:

Reduces your tax bill but cannot exceed your tax liability.

Refundable Portion (ACTC):

Up to $1,700 per child can be refunded even if you owe no taxes. Requires at least $2,500 in earned income.
